The Myth of Multiculturalism

by John Waddey(43)

The molders and shapers of our public opinion continually stress that all cultures are of equal merit and value. The code word is multiculturalism. Hence we are daily reminded that third world cultures and Islamic society in particular, must not be judged by our standards. They have their own standards of right and wrong which we must respect. To pass critical judgement on another man’s culture, beliefs or practices is not politically correct in our postmodern world.

Similarly, older Whites should not be judgmental of the rap music of young Blacks. To those who are really culturally astute, it is equal to that of Bach or Glen Miller. Those raised in democracies must try to see the positive aspects of Cuba’s Communist system. They tell us how much better the lot of the Cubans is under their current system. We should not think that the art work of the European Renaissance Masters is qualitatively superior to the spray-paint taggings of an urban gang banger. Judgmentalism is strictly taboo in our day.

A couple of years ago the  news carried a report of warriors in the Congo who  practiced cannibalism, systematic rape, torture and killing of civilians. I can’t help but wonder how such behavior should be interpreted in light of the templet of multiculturalism. If the doctrine is true here in America would it not also be true in Africa? Who are we to judge the culture, beliefs and practices of those Congolese? They are only doing what their culture dictates for them to do. Each culture is free to establish its own standards, values and truths, according to the new way of thinking.

On the other hand, old fashion common sense tells us that rape, cannibalism, torture and murder are wicked, barbaric practices regardless of who practices them; whatever may be his race, his religion or his culture. Perhaps a wise multicultural sociologist from one of our great  universities will explain this for us.
