A Nation Without God

by John Waddey(40)
firstcenturychristian

In the course of human history many nations have abandoned their gods. Some felt they had outgrown the old religion. Others were won to new gods or systems of religion. Some were coerced to change and in others cases faith was swallowed up by prosperity and pleasure. All over our planet are scattered the ruins of ancient temples where once the masses worshiped their gods. All that is left of their temples are ruins. The gods are forgotten and their former devotees have disappeared.

Today the nations of Europe have in large part abandoned faith in Jehovah and the worship of his Son. Once thriving churches, now stand empty. They are like monuments in a cemetery, reminding visitors of the death of the congregation that once met there. The story in each case is pretty standard. First the preachers lost their faith. In their days in the seminary their faith was undermined by liberal professors. With a blighted faith they could not inspire their congregations. They had no zeal to evangelize converts to a faith they found to be meaningless. Their liberal indifference spread to their flocks. The young, with their stunted faith, soon abandoned that. The pull of the world swallowed them up. One by one the older members grew feeble and died. Er long the congregation was dead. So wide spread was this loss of faith that today, the continent is almost devoid of faith...save for the zealous Muslim immigrants who will likely inherit those nations because of the fecundity and their dedication to their militant religion

Here in America we see a similar scene unfolding. Since the 1960s Secularists have made tremendous headway in our land. Having gained control of most schools of higher learning, they have been able to indoctrinate millions of young people while they were under their classroom influence. Many completed their college with an inferior education, but they had been persuaded they did not need God in their lives. They were convinced that pleasure and possessions were the summon bonum of life. They had accepted the secular dogma that religion was a bore and a drag to be cast aside. Secularists also captured our vast educational system. For twelve years they hold in their hands the minds and hearts of 90 percent of our youngsters. In those years they do not fail to plant their seeds of irreligion in their tender hearts. The gods of this world have supplanted the God of heaven in the hearts of many. Television and movie producers are in large part secularists. Most are materialists and hedonists, who not only ignore God, they seek every opportunity to use their medium to subtly discredit Christianity. Publishers of books and magazines have joined in the effort to marginalize Faith. The shock troops of the secularist movement are the leaders of the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. With the powerful weapons of Political Correctness, Pluralism and threats of lawsuits they have been able to force most politicians to distance themselves from any positive encouragement of Christian standards.

We now have a situation where every expression of Christianity has been driven from the classrooms of our schools. It is unwelcome, even forbidden on all governmental property, it is held up for contempt and ridicule in the media and entertainment venues. Many city fathers do not want to issue building permits to churches in prime sections of their cities. Many businesses have virtually outlawed any public expressions of faith by their employees. Most liberal politicians are to be found in the secularist camp. We are well on the way to becoming a nation without God!

To take this course is to ignore our and repudiate our heritage. America was the flowering of Western Civilization, a civilization based on the morals and values of Christianity. The men who conceived our nation saw clearly that only a God-fearing people could sustain a free, democratic society and government. Consider the following words from key founding fathers:

* George Washington, in his Farewell Address warned, " Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports...And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. "

* John Adams wrote, " Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. "

* James Madison said, " before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governor of the Universe. "

* Thomas Jefferson asked the question, " Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? " (All the above quotes are from The De-Valuing of America by William J. Bennett, p. 206-207).

When a nation rejects God (I Sam. 8:7), there are certain consequences that automatically go with the decision.

* A nation without God forfeits its right to petition God and call upon him for its necessary provisions. Rejecting God, it would be foolish and futile to pray to God for relief from flood, famine, pestilence and other disasters (I Sam. 10:19). If there is no God, no help can be expected. To pray for help only when a nation is in dire straits is a demonstration of the hypocrisy of those who in better times rejected God.

* A nation that reject God surrenders its right to call upon God when threatened by the violence of aggressor nations. A God who has been rejected cannot be expected to protect a people who have made him persona non-grata (I Sam. 15:26)..

* Without God, such a nation cannot ask God to bless its military troops that go into harm’s way to protect its borders and people.

* Without God, a nation has no meaningful standard by which to judge human conduct. It might be the will of the majority that makes the law; be they good or evil. It could be the will of one or of a group of powerful men who may be honorable or corrupt. Without God, either " might makes right " or chaos will be its standard.

* A nation without God will ultimately sink in the mire of its own ungodliness. Decadence affects nations like aging and disease affects people. The end is the same.

* A nation without God has no bright future before it, only the darkness of despair and desolation.

* A nation that rejects God, defies and denies Him and in so doing dares Him to impose justice and recompense upon her (Lev. 26:14-17). In all of human history no such defiance has been successful.

* When God chooses to judge a rebellious nation it can have no defense against His anger (Ps. 76:7).

* A nation without God must deny her past history. She must erase the mention of God, Christ and the Bible from every public monument and building and from every governmental document of the past. To leave these words in place is a constant reminder that the leaders of the present have abandoned the truths on which the nation was founded. In the ruins of dead nations we find statues with the faces marred or removed, names chiseled from their monuments.

* A nation without God is like a ship on the ocean without rudder or anchor, engine or home port. It is lost and doomed to be swallowed up by the wind and waves. A sizeable portion of our citizens are already in just such a ship! I refuse to join them! What about you?
