Morals, Values, Duty
by Joel Hendon(754)
Just what have we a duty to do? Some feel they have no duty as such. They owe no one. Duty is described by the dictionary as:
n., 1. An act or a course of action that is required of one by position, social custom, law, or religion: Do your duty to your country.
2. a. Moral obligation: acting out of duty.
b. The compulsion felt to meet such obligation
To be an acceptable member of society, one has a number of duties. To be an acceptable member of Jesus Christ's kingdom, he has even more duties. There are certain morals and ethics as explained in the Holy Bible which man owes to his fellow man. Not just because the Bible says so, but because it is decent and good to care for the welfare and happiness of others as well as himself. Unbelievers may try and say that morals and ethics are not "Biblical" virtues but simply natural. I disagree with that completely. Our efforts to be good and decent citizens and opposed to harming others are virtues directly from the Bible and they have permeated societies throughout the ages.
Even our laws enacted by men, if good laws, are based on Bilical principles. We have some laws which are not, but they should not exist. This is a reason that only a man with good Christian values should be elected to public office and his creation of laws should be based on those taught in the Bible.
If a person is a citizen of the United States, he has multiple duties (things which he owes) because of his partaking of the good life and freedoms offered to us. We don't always agree with all of our laws, but as long as we are truly free, we owe allegience to our country. We have a duty to support it with our taxes and to defend it, even with our lives if need be. We have a duty to be good citizens and not to harm, kill or steal from our fellow man. That includes purloining of a person's spouse.
When we marry and raise children, we have a sacred duty to our mate and our children to support, defend and protect them, as well as nourish and teach them how they should live in order to perpetuate decency and respect for others. Something that is terribly lacking in our present day.
When you create children, purchase animals, birds, etc., other than for food, you owe them sustenance and care. If you hire employees, sevants, etc, you owe them decent treatment and the wages agreed upon. They, in turn, owe you the honest performance of their work they agreed to do, to the best of their ability. Those things are your duties and their duties.
