The Annulment Of A Marriage, Be Careful

by Joel Hendon(171) Red Star

Through the years, I have known of several marriages which were annulled. I have heard of many more than I actually was close to or knew the individuals personally. You don't hear of nearly so many these days and I suspect that is because a majority of youngsters who become overwhelmed with desire for another, simply proceed to satisfy that desire without the benefit of marriage. Forty or fifty years ago, you would hear of a young couple sneaking away and getting married long before they were mature enough to know what they were doing. And it seemed that most parents first thought was of annulment.

The word is not restricted to marriage but applies to about anything that is cancelled or ruled of non effect. But our subject is that connected with marriage. And to the Christian, individual or family, it poses some difficult questions. The circumstances of each case may bring on different questions but the scriptures need to be involved in any case. One should always strive to do the thing that is pleasing to God.

It seems that one specific scenario where there is not much question, if two youths are under the legal age to marry and if they find some person legally qualified to marry them, it still remains an illegal marriage if they are under age, according to the law. And it seems that this was the factor in most of the cases I knew of, and more especially, if the parents became aware of it before it was consummated by the couple.

It is difficult to determine just what would constitute a recognized marriage by God. God expects His people to be subject to the laws of the land and it is my opinion (and that is only what it is) that if a young couple marry illegally, and whether or not consummation has occurred, then God would not recognize that marriage. It would be the same as if they had simply committed fornication, as many do without being married.

I realize that the act of a certain type of ceremony probably has no bearing on whether or not God recognizes a marriage. Only that it is done legally according to civil law. And it also involves much else concerning the intent and sincerity of the individuals. Although, those who marry legally and consensually, I believe this is a binding relationship in the eyes of God.

There are far too many people who do not regard the Bible as their guide when it comes to marriage, annulment, divorce, remarriage, etc. But it should be first and foremost in the minds of any who are involved in either of those actions. God intended for marriage to be between one man and one woman, for life, and there are very few exceptions according to the scripture. Once two are legally married and are so in the eyes of God, the scriptures offer only two events which can break that bond. Death or adultery on the part of one's mate. No more. You can read it all day and all night and you cannot find more excuses. So don't ask me what I believe about it. I'm just telling you what the Bible declares.

I've heard of those who become drunken and marry, only to wake up the next morning wishing they had not. Don't ask me for sympathy there. You just made the worst mistake of your life, and it was 100% your fault. I have known of so many people who sinned themselves back into a corner with virtually no escape. There is always an escape, but often times it is just too difficult for most to accept.

All young people ought to be taught what is right and wrong, not just what is most fun. Their search for a mate should not be by lust, but by finding one who will be someone you can grow old with and whose love will last beyond death.

Great words of wisdom. Wish I had known about them long ago. In my case all I can say is thank God for his mercy and forgiveness. I hope young people will read this article and believe. Not following God's laws bring heartache and devastation, not just to yourself but others also.
