Is America A Christian Nation?
by Joel Hendon(754)
President Obama, in a speech while in Turkey stated that we no longer consider America as a Christian nation, nor a Jewish Nation, nor a Muslim nation. Is that right? From my personal perspective, he is correct in one sense and incorrect in another. So the answer would be Yes and No I suppose. But let's talk about it.
What constitutes a nation that is called one thing or another, a Muslim nation? Jewish nation? We have to admit that there are some truly Muslim nations, they have an overwhelming percentage of their population who adhere to the Islamic religion and their laws are Shariah law. There is one truly Jewish nation, Israel, whose population is overwhelmingly of the Jewish religion and their laws are based on their religion. There are also several nations with a majority of Muslim people although they have a secular government, such as Turkey and Iraq. These may or may not be considered a Muslim nation but they cannot claim to be the strict Muslim state as others mentioned above.
This nation of America was settled primarily by Christians, many trying to escape the tyranny of the apostate "Christian" rule in Europe where they were not allowed to worship God except under the directions of the ruling religion. They settled the land and upon forming a union, proclaimed that the government would not interfere in anyone's religion, or the free exercise thereof. But, it did not state or infer that one was required to be a Christian. They based their laws upon the morals and commandments found in the Holy Bible. And they invoked pleas to the God of the Bible to strengthen them and to protect them, in their various documents.
Now, do those facts constitute a "Christian" nation? Some say no, that we were never a true Christian nation. But I believe that those facts did indeed constitute a Christian nation. Perhaps there were those who did not follow Christ, and possibly there were laws enacted which were not precisely those which Christ would have approved. But, I believe the vast majority of those settlers believed and trusted God to care for them and that they truly tried to obey and worship Him as they felt would be pleasing to Him. I do not accept the fact that every person must be spotlessly clean for a nation to be considered a Christian one.
But now, we come to the essence of President Obama's statement. Is America no longer a "Christian" nation? He says we no longer consider ourselves a Christian nation. That hurts to have to say, but I agree with him. I don't accept it as he does, with pride, and approval. I accept it as a sad fact, a truly lamentable fact. Why do I say that? Not because we have other religions among us. I fully believe that Christ taught that every man has free moral agency and can accept Him or not.
I feel this way due to the fact that so very many, even the ones who wish to wear the Christian name as a cover, have strayed so far from biblical teachings. If we had not lost our right to be called a Christian nation long before, we assuredly did when our legislators and judicial members enacted the Roe versus Wade law.
When our nation legally allows the beastly murder of innocent babies at the whim of a mother who prefers not to have stretch marks, I believe Satan might even turn his back on them. When a mother's heart is so hardened that she can be a part in killing her child, she has no right to wear the name Christian, even loosely.
When a government comes to the point that it will not allow the mention of God or His son Jesus Christ in public gatherings, but will allow false teachings to be taught as fact in schools, the nation is no longer Christian.
We no longer have the right to be called a "religious" nation, when all things are allowed except religion. We no longer qualify as a "free" nation when we are not allowed to speak out against sinful practices.
Those of us who still desire to serve and worship God according to His Holy Word, need to let our voices be heard to our elected officials and by our votes.
It needs to be done now while there still may be hope for this once great nation.

Great article, Joel. I'm struggling to get my head around this issue. Do you think the Founding Fathers would have wanted our country to be considered a Christian nation? My guess would be that they probably didn't, since freedom of religion was so important to them. They understood what it was like to have a government run religion, and undoubtedly they knew people killed in the name of the government run religion (which was considered christian). At the same time, I don't think they ever wanted a country where anyone was afraid to practice their religion.Respond to this comment

Yeah Bruce, you've got it right. Their prime reason for being here was because of the forced religion. They did not want that to be in the government anymore. I suspect they would have liked to have seen everyone a Christian, but not forced to be.I didn't bring that point out, but that would actually rule out us ever being a Christian nation since to be so, I think the government would have had to designate it as the national religion.Respond to this comment
