Preachers Have To Say Unpleasant Things, Sometimes

by Joel Hendon(170) Red Star

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a preacher. I wish I were. I even tried to be once. But my quiet monotone put even the ushers to sleep. So I have basically devoted my life to writing concerning the word of God, rather than verbal proclamation. But regardless of how one gets the message to others, sometimes he is compelled to speak of things unpleasant. No one likes to be told they will be lost eternally, but by a large majority, they will be. What should an honest preacher do? If he sees someone involved in sin, he is absolutely required to try and convince that person to change. Now, if you find that unpleasant, read this Ezekiel 3:20:

Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

Now, a good and honest preacher who wishes to save his own soul, is not going to tell you that you'll be just fine when he knows you are astray from the teachings of the Bible. I won't do that, when I'm not even a preacher.

When a preacher or just an earnest Christian, tells you that you will be lost if you continue, whatever, you should never think the enjoys saying that. Chances are, it is breaking his heart. I know that I can hardly bring myself to even argue a point, but when I know what the Bible teaches, I have the obligation to present that, regardless of the circumstance. Look at what happened to John the Baptist. When he told the Herod it was unlawful for him to have his brother Philip's wife. He was imprisoned and later beheaded when the wife had her daughter request it. (Mark, chapter 6)

Look at Stephen who preached to the Jews of their lost condition, they stoned him to death. (Acts 7:54-60) Jesus spoke unpleasant things to those who were astray from God, with no sweet talk or smoothing it over. In Matthew 23:33 He said: "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?" I know, preachers are not Jesus, nor am I, but I do know that He did not sin and if I follow in His steps, neither will I.

So for the sake of your soul, when someone tells you something the Bible says, if it is not pleasing to you, don't flame off at him but rather tell him you thank him for his effort and then go and study what he said until you can know if he is right or wrong. If you find he is wrong, you need to go and straighten him out, or otherwise, he will die in his sin...and guess who his blood will be upon?
