Once upon a time, I was asked to be a pallbearer by my boss at his mother's funeral. He informed me that she was of the Baha'i faith. At that time, I had never heard of this religious group and had no idea of their teachings. The funeral was conducted differently to any other I had witnessed. There were no other members of that religion in the vicinity where she lived. Three people from some other location who were members of the Baha'i faith were brought in to conduct the funeral. Two of them each read a prepared script in a chant like manner. Then the one with the primary job of conducting the service, also read a much more lengthy prepared lesson, more in the tone of a regular religious message or sermon.
What was brought out in his lesson was something that caused me to consider over the years, just what he had said. He pointed out that the body of physical material was doomed to corruption, while the soul (or mind), was spirit from God and was incorruptible. I stayed with him in that respect. But then, he brought up some information which, although very meaningful, I had never read, nor had I given it any thought.
If I understood him correctly, and remember it correctly, he depicted the soul as a completely separate entity to that of the body and that it had immense capacity. It was, he said, limited only by the fact that it was in captivity of the physical body and it's activities were limited to the conditions and dictates of the body and nervous system. He gave the inference, to me, that the mind would be virtually limitless when released from the soul at death. As I said above, this was new thinking for me and at first, I really thought he may have simply made up a dramatic tale.
But one thing he definitely accomplished, he embedded the thoughts in my mind and I have spent an abnormal amount of time since, in trying to thrash this out. Perhaps too much of my time. But the more I consider these things, I have come to believe he was very, very close to the correct resolution of this dilemma. Following I will attempt to explain why.
Where he said the soul (mentality) would be almost limitless upon release from our bodies at death. I believe he is perhaps right. It makes some sense to me to think that ones present mentality, even among those who suffer from some form of retardation, is probably as great as, or greater, than any of our most brilliant men. But it is simply restricted to the physical attributes of the brain, nerves and electrical impulses which make up or physical nervous system. And these variations of minor defects or restrictions may be inherited, caused by varying amounts of nutrients, injuries or other such things.
Beside these thoughts, we all have known of, or at least heard of incidents which have occurred that were inexplicable, astoundingly so. One man told me once that the human mind was almost capable of prophesy. I also agree with that. I have been a personal witness of one such occurrence and I refuse to accept that it was coincidence. It is much too far-fetched to be coincidence. You don't want to hear it? I'm going to tell you anyway.
My mother was 36 years old when I was born, the ninth time she had given birth and her health was bad, she almost died. Everyone, including her and my father, felt that this was to be the last birth for her. This was in 1930. My oldest brother, 13 years old at the time, found employment in Atlanta some five years later.
He came home frequently on week ends. In the later part of February, 1936, on one of his visits home he, told us of a dream that occurred on February 17 just before his visit home. He explained that it was different to any he had ever had in his life and it seemed much more realistic than others. But he would not detail what the dream was, but he did say that something rather big was to occur in our family two years from the date of his dream. He held everyone in suspense for those two years, yet it was discovered in the early Fall of 1937, that mother was pregnant and on February 17, 1938, she gave birth to a baby girl.
Now, it is not miraculous that a woman would give birth at 44 years old, not at all. And it is not too surprising that, even though unplanned, it might happen. But my brother insisted that this was exactly what his dream predicted. We had no reason to doubt it. And again I believe that is asking to much of coincidence. It would be very, very unlikely if a couple themselves decided to have a baby two years from a specific date, that they could accomplish that to the day without any assistance from medication or professional help.
But back to our subject of the soul and it's capacity. I do not accept that we will have the infinite knowledge and wisdom as that of the God head. But I do believe our mentality will be enormously advanced over that which it is today. I do believe the soul that is imparted by God, is totally mature and capable of extreme knowledge, at the point of conception. But it is released little by little as the fetus and the born child learns more and more and allows this knowledge to accumulate in our memory.
If a hypnotist suggests to a receptive subject that his white blood cells are attacking cancer cells in his body, the population of white blood cells ranging through the subject's body will increase. Such "visualization" research is being conducted by Howard R. Hall at Penn State. The results seem to demonstrate the direct influence of hypnotic suggestion on the body's immune system.(Anonymous; "Hypnotism May Help Antibody Production," Baltimore Sun, October 19, 1981.)
Comment. Since hypnotic suggestion is known to affect warts, body temperature, etc., its enhancement of the white blood cell population is merely one more example of the power of the mind over the body. The real mystery is just how the brain's electrical signals are converted into specific biological activity. (From Science Frontiers #19, JAN-FEB 1982.© 1982-2000 William R. Corliss)
