Veterans Deserve Our Respect and Honor

A few years ago I was at a yard sale and an old fellow dropped by to shop. His face was badly scarred and he had an arm missing. He spotted an old faded American flag and looking closely it had only 48 stars. That was the flag under which he had fought in World War II. He scooped it up and held it close to his heart. Watching him, I approached and asked, "I bet you fought under that flag." He nodded his head and I said, "Sir you are a hero and I salute you for what you did and the suffering you endured." With a quiet voice he responded, "We left the heroes in the islands." That is, they died and were buried there.

We who enjoy the blessings of freedom and liberty owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to every man and woman who has or is presently serving in our military. True, not all of them were or are angels. But that is the case with all of humanity. However they risked their lives for us. They faced the worst of terrors, they endured incredible hardships on our behalf. Some saw their comrades perish. Others suffered painful wounds to their bodies and minds and some, permanent disfigurement.

When I hear ungrateful citizens denigrate our military or some self-serving politician speak disparagingly of them, my anger rises. What worthless ingrates such people are. They are unworthy of the freedom they enjoy, paid for by the blood and suffering of those who went to our defense. You might fault the politicians and bureaucrats who mismanaged the war, but don’t fault those whose job it was to take orders and do their best.

Not just on Veterans’ Day or Memorial Day, but every day of the year, include in your prayers, thanks for our veterans and those presently serving. When you meet them in your daily life, take a moment to thank them for their sacrificial service. We breath the sweet air of freedom because they faced the fire and fury of war and prevailed. Our honor and respect they have earned.
