Sonia Sotomayor: Good Choice? Bad Choice?

I have considerably mixed emotions concerning Obama's choice for Supreme Court Justice. There are some things which I admire about her and others which frighten me. I am told that she will stand up to anyone when she feels a point is correct. That's good. She is Hispanic, that is good. I have a soft spot in my heart for Hispanics, not that I am for illegal immigration in any sense. I just like the people.
I just finished reading an article about her which was criticizing one of her decisions of the past. I see the point of the article's writer but I'm not at all sure I disagree with her decision. The writer uses his point of contention as her stand after the Supreme Court issued their landmark decision last year that the second amendment applies to individuals and that they are indeed allowed to own and carry weapons.
Since that time, there have been court cases trying to define whether or not the 2 nd amendment is applicable to the states. There have been two appeal courts cases or six judges who were involved in those cases, three determined that it was applicable to the states while three stand that it is not. It is a bit more complicated than my knowledge of law can make any positive statement towards but I do know that the first 10 amendments, the Bill of Rights, were written to spell out the individuals and states rights, and that which the federal government could not override.
It seems to me that the freedom it gives to own and carry arms, is most definitely inclusive of states and individuals. But, on the other hand, that being said, I am not sure that the federal government can rule that a state cannot ban guns. This is the stand of Judge Sotomayor. This is not what we would like, those of us who feel we have the right, want that right extended to all responsible citizens, but the Bill of Rights give strong powers to the states. It seems to me however, that their power to ban guns in view of the amendment would be null and void.
If Sotomayor is staunch in her belief in states rights, I'm on her side. We have some capable Senators who will grill her thoroughly and I feel sure her feelings along this line will be exposed. I am a little surprised that the president nominated her but, in view of the others he had considered, I commend him for it. We all recognize that he will never nominate a conservative judge so we will probably have to take the closest thing we can get from him.
Whatever, I wish her well and if she is appointed I will include her in my prayers along with the other leaders of our nation.
