Adoration of Leaders Is Dangerous

Among the ebullient worshipers of Mr. Obama is Evan Thomas, editor of Newsweek magazine. In a moment of spiritual euphoria he pronounced that not only was Mr. Obama greater than Ronald Reagan who was only the leader of America, the current occupant of the White House is " god-like " with a world vision, who stands above the mundane things of our little nation. Chris Matthews of Hardball confessed that when he beheld Mr. O and heard his well-read words a chill and a tingle was felt in his leg. Frank Schaeffer, unable to control his adulation, gushed, " Obama is one of the most intelligent presidential aspirants to ever step forward in American history. The likes of his intellectual capabilities have not been surpassed in public life since the Founding Fathers put pen to paper. His personal character is also solid gold... " During his presidential campaign we were often treated to scenes of young women screaming, swooning and fainting in his wondrous presence.

I don’t know where these three spokesmen received their education, but it was obviously deficient, if they really believe the words they have spoken. I wonder what books they might have read? Have they spent all their life in comics or science-fiction?

At first glance, such response to our president might be laughable, but when viewed against the backdrop of human history, it is chilling. This is the kind of reaction ignorant people (even though of university stock) give, in the beginning, to those who eventually become their masters. It is commonly seen in religious cults. Remember, David Koresh, Jim Jones and Charles Manson’s followers all thought their leaders had superhuman qualities and were ready to follow and obey them without question. We can see it today in the benighted people of North Korea who worship the president Kim Jung Il. They call him " Our Dear Leader. " His official title is " Eternal President. " Without shame or embarrassment they have deified their tyrant and worship him. A national hymn entitled " No Motherland Without You, " sings his praises.

Compared with George Washington, the planter and officer who led our revolutionary army, what has Mr. Obama done? Compared to Jefferson, the renaissance man who gave us our Declaration of Independence, what has Mr. O done? Compared to Lincoln, the country lawyer, who led the nation through the savage civil war and saved the union, what has Mr. O done? Compared to Franklin Roosevelt, who led us out of the Great Depression and through World War II, what has our current president done? Compared to Eisenhower, who led the Allied Nations in the defeat of the axis nations in World War II, what has Mr. O done? Compared to Mr. Reagan, who led us to victory in the Cold War and whose policies gave us a decade of great prosperity, what has our current president done? This list of comparisons could be extended but these few show the foolishness of those who blindly adore the mortal man who has been elected to lead us.

As to his golden character, consider those who in Chicago were his mentors, friends and associates and in Washington those whom he nominated to accomplish his agenda. Twenty years from now wiser men will be able to assess the leadership skills of our president.
