A Republic is Not a Socialist State

by John Waddey(43)

When a lady asked Ben Franklin what the Constitutional Convention had given the people, the wise old philosopher responded, "A Republic, Ma'am, if you can keep it." Although it has taken us some 225 years, it is safe to say that the "republic" which the founding fathers gave us is well on its way into oblivion. In its place is a new kind of government operating on the principles of socialism as in most European nations. The voting public was warned that such was one of the choices in the last presidential election, but the majority closed their eyes, stopped their ears and grew angry at those who issued such warnings. The current administration took office with this profound change of direction in mind. The vague, pre-election promise of benign, beneficial change was laid aside and a vigorous program of fundamental changes to the heart and soul of our democracy was instituted. Drastic changes were not just proposed, but ordered, to the political, social, financial, economic and moral/ethical life of our nation. Suddenly, government with its hordes of bureaucrats, were taking control of major portions of our nation’s business sector. Insurance companies, finance companies, automotive industries, the tobacco industry all were taken in quick succession. Next in line is our health industry. Government monetary policy has been turned on its head as politicians, drunken with power, spend trillions of dollars we do not have in order to build their empire. With the control of the presidency, and both houses of Congress in their hands, and with ninety percent of the national media promoting their agenda, the implementation of their socialistic program is proceeding without serious obstruction.

As we celebrate Independence Day, 2009, we should remember Mr. Franklin’s prophetic words, It is a republic Madam, if you can keep it.
