The United Kingdom is far more advanced into Socialism than we are at this point, yet their footsteps should give us pause for deep consideration. Their socialized medical program, like many others, is highly unsatisfactory for many, especially when urgent surgery or other procedures are necessary. The government decides which insurance plan and what medical treatments one can have. And the government continues to invade the rights of their citizens, overriding laws which have been in effect for many years.
A lady in Belfast, Northern Ireland, who is suffering from multiple sclerosis, has recently won a landmark ruling in the House of Lords that she may have assisted suicide. The case is wrought with technicalities in attempting to avoid existing laws, one of which is that her husband may be prosecuted if he accompanies her to the Dignitas euthanasia clinic in Switzerland where the procedure will be done.
One doesn't have to be a futurist or prophet to see where this is headed. Having removed the right to life from the unborn in the United Kingdom and the United States, it is only a matter of conditioning before the at-first "voluntary" and ultimately involuntary snuffing out of life at its other end will be tolerated and, indeed, promoted as the state seeks new ways to cut expenses.
What is to stop that if life has only the value assigned to it by the state? As suicide, like abortion, becomes a "choice," it will be done for reasons that go beyond the reason through which it is ushered in: the supposed "intolerable pain and suffering" and "lack of hope" of recovery. Abortion on demand was conceived through the bogus rape of an unmarried woman, and now it can be had for any reason, or no reason. Crimes against humanity don't begin in the ovens or on killing fields, but by small steps among civilized people. (Cal Thomas-A euphemism for euthanasia: Washingtontimes.com 8/4/2009)
Hidden within the over 1,000 pages of the current Healthcare Reform bill is language which will give government appointed committees the right to make rulings as to who gets what treatment, even to that of relief of severe pain, especially in the elderly. They will have the right to decide whether one has a chance for any further quality of life and therefore refuse treatment without the consent of doctor, patient or family. This administration has already let it be known as to what they think of unborn helpless babies, the mentally or physically impaired and the elderly.
Obama himself, questioned the wisdom of his grandmother’s choosing to have expensive hip surgery to eliminate excruciating pain when it was known that she had only a few months to live. Health Care Advocate Betsy McCaughey, has been quoted as saying the writer of the current health care bill believes that spending money on those seriously ill is “a waste of money”.
She also says that on page 15 of the 1,018 page document, it says that people with private insurance plans will be required to move to a government plan “in many cases”. This is the direct opposite to the statement by Obama that, “if you have a private insurance plan which you are happy with, you can keep it.” But then, it is not the first time he has lied outright.
If you have parents who are living on social security and have Medicare plus a supplement plan with which they are happy, depend upon it, that will be made into a total government plan with massive cuts in benefits. It has already been stated by the administration that much of the funding for the healthcare program will be from reductions in Medicare and Medicaid programs. These programs are already in severe financial condition so the only way savings can be realized is by the virtual elimination of these programs which elderly are so dependent upon.
Contact your legislators and tell them you are opposed to any reductions in these programs so vital to the elderly.
