Vexation Of Spirit, And Me

by Joel Hendon(179) Red Star

Solomon king of Israel, was granted much wisdom from God, because he asked for it instead of riches. He lived a sumptuous life with huge riches and was led astray by his love for women. He married 700 wives and took 300 concubines. He began to participate in the worship of their false gods and idols. As he grew old, he looked back on his life and he concluded that "all is(was) vanity and vexation of spirit."  You will find that he repeated that phrase seven times in the book of Ecclesiastes chapters 1, 2 and 4. God had warned the Israelites before time that "Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods:"  (I Kings 11:2) having reference to the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians or the Hittites as listed in verse 1. But Solomon ignored the warning and surely they did as God had warned.

The term, vex, vexed, vexing or vexes is not used much today. I don't know why because it is a good word to describe annoyances, bothers, distress, perplexity, and so on. I know that I find many things to be vexing. Solomon used the word "all" and sometimes, I feel he was mostly right. I become vexed at the wads of crabgrass and dandelions which keep showing up in my lawn. My dogs, whom I love with little reservations, vex me with their lack of prudence in performing their daily routines, also on my lawn.

And even worse than these petty things I find most vexing of all, the lies told by politicians until they have their way and then they rub it in your face. "Gotcha!"  Equally vexing to me is that the evolutionists, naturalists, atheists and such like who profess that they believe completely in the scientific causes of life and existence of matter, etc., when they have no science whatsoever to back them up.

They all claim that to mention intelligent design or creationism, has no basis for science because it cannot be reproduced in the lab. Neither can their feeble suppositions for the beginning of any of those things.  They know that but they still say theirs is scientific and ours is not. There is much more scientific evidence for creation than there is for the "big bang". I really don't see how they can propound these ridiculous ideas without snickering. And then spend their lives trying to prove every little thing to fit their supposition when in actuality, they disprove them. And these people have their feeble suppositions taught in schools as scientific facts, with impunity.

That, is indeed vexation of spirit for me. But I feel somewhat justified by it after reading the apostle Peter's remarks in 2 Peter 2:7-9:  "And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished"
