I have often wondered what compels a person to desire the office of president of the United States. It cannot help but be one of the most stressful positions in the world. Philosophically, I find extremely little on which I agree with our current president. But even so, I don’t dislike him personally and there are times when I can actually sympathize with him. Right now is one of those times. I feel sure that the man would like to serve eight years as a popular president and achieve much progress in all areas by the end of that time. But at this moment I feel sure he is not sleeping well.
I can only say though, that he has brought it on himself. He aligned himself with, and became obligated to, such forces as the MoveOn.org group, George Soros, the powerful unions and others who had no delight in him other than they could exert tons of pressure upon him for their campaign support. He is now having to trade the popularity of the people for the insistance of those supporters and the radical side of his party.
That is one reason he has himself to blame. After that, I don’t know how much of what he has done was of his own volition or if it was done due to the massive pressure from those sources. Regardless of where the blame lies, he has jumped into the quicksand feet first and has tried to resolve everything in the first six months. That was an impossible task and he should have known it. Now look at the problems he faces from almost every angle.
Domestically, his popularity is in a nose dive. Nothing he has done has proven successful. The proclamation that the economy is beginning to get better is a pipe dream. It is no better, but continues to worsen, and the near future will prove it to be in wonderful condition now compared to what it will be. To levy taxes, even if it is only on fuel, soft drinks, tobacco, alcohol and such like, will add to the slow down of the economy. Yet, with the huge national debt and the obvious trillions in deficit spending to be added to it during his eight years, can mean only one thing. Double digit inflation, more and more taxes, less and less progress in the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) which translates into less and less jobs.
Politically, he has completely failed to encourage bipartisan cooperation. He has failed by promoting ultra liberal bills that are not only unpopular and unworkable, but rather detrimental, and then he browbeats the opposition by calling them the “no” party. He does not consider that these bills are in complete disagreement with conservative views and yet he expects concessions and cooperation from the other party. When, if any concession from the liberal views are mentioned, it becomes a conspiracy by the conservatives to stop his legislation. Instead of showing some efforts of reconciliation, he and his coolies call all opposition , un-American, terrorists, Ku-Klux Klan, and anything else imaginable. That is not working towards bipartisanship.
In an effort to win foreign approval, he has humbled the U.S. before renegades, sweet talked those nations who have been opposed to the U.S. and completely ignored their civil rights abuses and their tirades towards this country. And all to no avail. None of those nations are moving towards reconciliation but are rather talking nastily about him.
Russia feels that the U.S. and Europe are plotting against them in an effort to get Georgia and the Ukraine into the European Union. While many of those nations fear that he is selling them out to the Russians by secretly agreeing not to construct the anti-missile defense system in Poland or that area.
He urged Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu to freeze all construction of settlements in the West Bank area. This has not set well with the Israelis nor with those of his party who are allied with Israel. A number of congressmen are trying to work out an agreement which will be palatable with Israel. But in the meantime, many have lost confidence in the president and question just which side he is trying to take.
So, you can see that the man has enough worries right now to cause a loss of weight. Some are already saying he has no chance of winning a second term in office regardless of what he does from here on out. It is also highly unlikely that he will have a liberal majority in congress after next years congressional election.
The polls are already showing potential challengers for a number of their seats to be ahead. And, if the present proposal to choose the “nuclear option” to ram the unpopular health care bill through is taken and succeeds, it will almost seal the next years election results.
I have had periods of worry in my lifetime and when it becomes severe, it is highly unpleasant. I can recall nights when I would sleep little, only drift off for what seemed a few minutes, only to awaken to the same unpleasant concerns. None of mine, however, have been as deeply embedded and difficult to resolve as was that of the biblical character, Job who inspired the title of this article. Nor have they been so complicated with as many possible consequencs as those which currently beset our president.
Job, who was wealthy and lost every possession he had, even his children were killed, and yet he had the courage to say, “And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
The bible instructs Christians to pray for their leaders, and we must do so. He needs our prayers and it should be that we pray that he will make the proper decisions for our country and our well being.
