My wife thinks I am a chocoholic, but I consider myself simply as a connoisseur of delectable delicacies. And chocolate is perhaps the top of my choices. If it were not for my powerful self-control, I could eat myself sick on good chocolate, about anything made with it. I’m not a great ice cream lover at all. In fact, I normally will pass when offered a dish of the stuff...unless, (you know) it’s chocolate, or mixed into a chocolate shake.
I just read an article where Kraft Foods has made a bid to purchase Cadbury’s from the UK. For 10.2 billion pounds! That’s the equivalent of 16.7 billion U.S. Dollars. A lot of spaghetti. Cadbury makes some very good chocolate products. I don’t know what process they use, but their chocolate candies are ultra smooth. I don’t believe the taste is better than Hershey’s but the texture helps somewhat. I still prefer Hershey’s in most cases.
Now the problem is, Cadbury has rejected the offer made by Kraft and now it is expected that Nestle SA and the Hershey Company may submit competing bids which will likely raise the ante. I’m not too knowledgeable, about this business where one company can come in and take over another company, even if the takee’ objects. But Kraft is considering that step nonetheless and it appears they will be able to do it, providing they offer the highest bid.
I get the shivers when my favorite foods companies start buying against some others will and get involved in litigation. I suggest to them all that they be extra careful not to cause manufacturing delays or unwarranted changes in recipes and so on. The last thing I wish to see is some good products bite the dust. I just hope the coffee companies don't get involved.
I have been very encouraged, over the past few years, to have learned that dark chocolate offers health benefits not recognized so much in years past. I’m told there are 8 times as many flavonoids which act as antioxidants, as there are in strawberries. I like dark chocolate, but I like milk chocolate much better. By using the reasoning of a true chocolate lover, I figure if I eat twice or thrice as much milk chocolate as the dark, I will have gotten my healthy flavonoids just the same. Or at least as many as I would have gotten from a bowl of strawberries.
Our economy is in poor enough condition without the price of chocolate going through the ceiling. I think I’ll write my congressman a precautionary letter
