Where Is The Fairness And Equality?

This article is not intended to place blame on anyone...primarily because I don’t know who is to blame. President Obama specifically stated that there would be a clause in the revised healthcare bill which would state that no person would qualify for the benefits from it who are not legally registered citizens or those who are here illegally. I don’t question that he means it. But, I have read where one constitutional expert judge states that ANYONE, in this country is eligible by the constitution to receive medical care, with no restrictions as to their legality and regardless of their ability to pay.

I served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war with several full blooded Mexican fellows (although citizens of the U.S.) and I found them to be absolutely great men. I have no prejudice towards them as a people whatsoever. In fact I admire them. But on the other hand, people who are here illegally, whether Mexican or other, are criminal. They are breaking our laws. I do not hold them in high esteem.

A case I recently read was an unemployed, indigent and uninsured illegal alien who lived in Georgia and was involved in an automobile accident and very seriously injured. He was hospitalized for one year, and accrued a bill of over 1 million dollars. He was to be returned to his native Mexico when he was stabilized, but he died before he was able. Taxpayer money covered his million dollar hospital bill plus any arrangements to return him to his people.

So, at least in part, our tax money is paying for many illegals medical bills. Another case concerned a 20 year old illegal alien also penniless, unemployed, uninsured and seven months pregnant, living in Los Angeles. California’s Medi-Cal will pay all of her prenatal care, her hospitalization and birth expenses and even car seats and diapers for her baby. All taxpayer dollars.

California, along with most other states, is faced with a serious financial crisis. They cannot handle the Medicaid costs alone and avoid bankruptcy. We have reached a point where our governments, federal and state, are simply trying to do more than the taxpayers are capable of supporting. Certainly, anyone with a heart would want to see people like those mentioned above, taken care of in their need. But, we absolutely cannot. All illegal aliens should be forced to register, be gainfully employed with insurance, or show proof that he can be responsible for his own medical bills, or be deported.

I realize that there are many jobs which most of our society do not want to perform, but with the massive unemployment, they should. There are plenty of aliens who are already here legally or could be allowed in legally to take those jobs if they desired. My entire youth was spent on a farm, working much harder than most farm jobs are today with modern mechanization. It didn’t hurt me and it would not hurt people now.

But the real unfairness of this situation is that  Anthony J. Principi, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs announced in January that all Category 8 veterans health enrollment would be suspended for one year. It is also likely that it will be suspended  for many years. It is true that Category 8 veterans are those with no service connected injuries or disease.  This will only apply to those whose annual income is over $13,000.

Also, the fact that approximately one half of the expense of the healthcare system is expected to be taken from “waste” and “fraud” in Medicare. Possibly there is that much, though I doubt it, we have laws against such now, why are they not being pursued. If they are being pursued, why do we expect to do better after the healthcare bill is in effect? Not only that, that waste and fraud money is needed now to keep the Medicare account solvent. This approach is absolutely childish. It will not resolve the problem. The president said that it would have to be paid for and would not increase our deficit spending. They desperately need to come up with the answers to how it will be paid, not just go into it planning to find a way.  We were supposed to stop adding “pork” into our spending bills. We have already proven that we will NOT do that.

There are two places that we can save billions of dollar. One is the aforementioned pork, that is added onto almost every bill which goes through congress. Billions! Another is that of tort reform.. Of course, the savings here will be for the doctors and hospitals who pay outrageous malpractice insurance costs. But that will lower the costs needed to finance any healthcare program.

The main factor, however, is that much less reform is needed than is being proposed. The tort reform, which will lessen the medical providers malpractice insurance which will directly lower the costs they must apply to their services, which in turn, should lower the insurance premiums. Now, we ask why do they not jump at these two points. BECAUSE, the pork is their way of keeping their constituents voting them back in each election and the tort reform lowers the millions of dollars taken in by the trial lawyers. AND, they back the liberals with megabucks in each of their re-election bids. So it is very unlikely that you will se any noticeable change in those two features.

I’ve never been one who pushed for limited terms for congressmen but there seems to be no other way to get some types of legislation passed. Invariably, when one becomes embedded and able to get pork for his constituents, it matters not how immoral, how unethical or foolish he becomes, he will be re-elected.
