A number of years ago when the courts ruled it unconstitutional to allow prayers in school, it was a step in the wrong direction but the very fact of no prayer in schools did not bother me all that much. I suspect that many such prayers may have been unscriptural anyway. But I thought it was a an error on the part of the court in that it infringed upon the freedom of speech and also the freedom of religion. Yet the main thing which bothered me was that the courts would use this as a stepping stone for further infringement.
There is no question that atheistic teaching has become accepted by more in recent years as people have abandoned God and allowed their morals and ethics to decay. I recently wrote an article which was entitled “Entering An Anti-Christian Era”. It has become discouraging to see so many who are rebuffing the very thought of Christian living. The fears I felt at the time mentioned above are now becoming a reality. Our nation is in danger of losing it’s freedom of religious exercise and expression. Most of you have no doubt read recently of the satanic ACLU pursuing a case brought against Frank Lay, school principal, and Robert Freeman, athletic director of the Pace High School in Florida.
The case stems from the fact that Principal Lay asked Freeman to offer thanks at a lunch for school employees and booster-club members who had helped with a school field-house project. No students were present.
The basis for this case goes back to last year when the ACLU sued the Santa Rosa school district on behalf of two students claiming that some teachers and administrators were allowing prayers at school events, and conducting other religious activities during school as well as after. The settlement, out of court, for that case included an agreement barring of all school employees from promoting or sponsoring prayers during school-sponsored events.
That agreement, according to the ACLU covered all employees at any school sponsored event, whether or not students were present. The Judge has issued contempt of court orders against the two men. They now face the real possibility of jail time for this breach. This is utterly pathetic, in a supposedly free country, to even dare bring two people to court over an act of reverence to their own God, with no children present.
Members of congress, on Monday, sent a letter of support to the two men, signed by 60 lawmakers. I’m sure this is encouraging to those men but it in no way, helps to resolve the case. It is good to know that we at least have a few in congress yet, who believes in a little freedom of religion.
There are also those who are raising money for the defense of the two school officials who are on trial. As of Tuesday, they had raised some $70,000. You may locate the website by placing “Lay and Freeman defense fund” in your Google search window.
