Another Partisan Bill Rammed Through The House

Nancy Pelosi, facing newsmen on Thursday, meekly whispered that she was concerned that the anger and harsh rhetoric might cause violence and encouraged all to try and tone down their language. Some said she choked or sobbed while she was saying it. I was unable to discern such, but rather I recognized that she was, even though she said all, referring to the angry conservatives who do not want the health care bill as written. Not withstanding that she stands up and calls the CIA liars, calls conservatives “Astroturf” instead of grass roots, and makes no apology for her hero, Jimmy Carter calling “the overwhelming majority” of conservatives who dislike the health care bill, racists.

I agree that much of the rhetoric is too harsh and also lies, but she need not try and lay it all on conservatives. She has no record of criticizing anyone who called George Bush a murderer, a  fool  and a liar. She preferred to simply accept it as facts since he was supposed to be conservative.

But now, HR3221 has passed the house by a vote of 253 to 171, almost totally partisan with only 4 democrats voting no, and 6 republicans voting yes. And it is one of the most blatant bills towards a government takeover of everything that has been brought to a vote.

Now pay attention to this, last year congress enacted ECASLA (Ensuring Continuing Access to Student Loans Act). The House vote was 388-21 which included 221 Democrats for it and none against it. The Senate passed it by unanimous consent. It was bi-partisan and generally accepted by all. The bill allowed private lender involvement in student loans without the creation of a new  federal bureaucracy.

Now the new HR3221 replaces the ECASLA, closing the door for private lenders to make student loans and forms a new bureaucracy with a “Green Schools Czar. Those schools which do not comply with the federal regulations may not be eligible for student loans! Although not as totally encompassing as the health care bill, it is just as socialistic and repugnant. The Democrats voted to replace a bill they unanimously voted for a year earlier.

House republicans offered a substitute bill for the HR3221 which made much more sense. It would have extended the ECASLA through 2014 and would have created a commission to develop a private sector model student lending. This more sensible and far less costly bill was defeated 165 to 265. The Democrats voted unanimously against it. But you see, it did not offer an appointed Czar who has to answer to no one but the president. Who is it that is "no" party?

I hope the more reasonable Senate will put this new bill to rest along with all the garbage from Nancy’s crew. I also hope the “blue dog” Democrats in the Senate understand that this bill is also going to raise the ire of many and is opposed by many of the major universities. There is only one thing we can look forward to, that not too much damage probably will result from this blatant partisan bill before the elections in 2010. After which the bill can be rescinded. Those of you who prefer freedom over socialism, might want to contact your Senators on this bill before it comes up and let them know how you feel about it.
