Another Obama Debacle

The one and two-tenths million dollar effort on the part of the Obamas along with Oprah, to convince the Olympic Committee that Chicago was the ideal location for the Summer Olympics in 2016, should bring home some sobering thoughts. Had it resulted in a close decision and Rio finally won out, it would not be so bad. But an international power as the U.S. has been, to be a first one eliminated is more than a lost chance to host those Olympics...it is a rebuff of magnitude.

I have found it extremely interesting to read the myriad reasons being opined by the various news media for this serious slap in the face. The liberals, seemingly without exception, come out with, ‘this is not an Obama thing, BUT....blah, blah’. While on the other hand, the Obama critics are laying the blame on him. I can be called a critic of Obama, and I do believe the large part of this is because of him, but not all. The United States has had their international public relations problems for many years before the advent of Obama the messiah.

The U.S. has been envied and resented by many of the world’s people, regardless of how much foreign aid we extended them, or emergency aid when a catastrophe occurred. Partly because of our wealth and strength and partly because many foreign travelers from the U.S. gave the people encountered by them, the appearance of arrogance and condescension. But even in the face of that, they tried to show respect and sometimes favoritism toward us because of our wealth and strength. They wanted to keep us on their side.

But, in the past year, our image has fallen to the bottom. The economic crash, not just ours but the world’s, has lowered the respect for us and the confidence they had in our dollar. The election of Barack Obama, raised more international eyebrows than goodwill, although it may have caused some to have a slightly higher opinion of us, but it was short lived. The new president, within a very few months, showed his naiveté to the world by ignoring our long time allies while romancing the likes of Hugo Chavez, bowing to the Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, or criticizing the U.S. in speeches throughout his travels. He consequently lost much of the world’s respect for himself while demeaning this great country.

When you couple all of that with the fact that Chicago has the reputation of being under the control of the most criminal and mobster elements of any city in the nation, and a young student was beaten to death there just shortly before this trip, you might expect those Olympic committeemen to give second thoughts to voting for us. We have the usual “Monday Morning Quarterbacks” with their doomsday evaluations. One I read, fears that the U.S. Olympic team will be unable to perform as well after considering our rejection by the committee. And it surely must tell someone, something. Look at the first round vote by the committee:

First round votes:  Chicago  18, Tokyo  22,  Rio de Janeiro  26,   Madrid   28
Second Round Votes:               Tokyo  20,   Rio de Janeiro  46,   Madrid   29
Third Round Votes                                          Rio de Janeiro  66,   Madrid    32

Some who heard the speech, say that it was one of the worst they have ever known the president to make, seemingly appearing to sell himself more than the U.S. and others criticize his going at all.

"It demeans the office," said GOP consultant Brad Blakeman, a former Bush administration official. "For the president to be reduced to the effect of the Billy Mays pitchman for the United States to get the Olympics for his home city of Chicago is just not something that presidents do." (Obamas Fail in Personal Pitch to Bring 2016 Olympics to Chicago: Fox News-October 2, 2009)

I have to agree with that comment. The president is not a public relations pitch man, for crying out loud. This simply shows his lack of maturity, thinking he would have been a hero, had he succeeded in his mission.

Our failure to be chosen for the 2016 Summer Olympics is not a calamity, it is not the end of the world...time goes on. It would have barely made the headlines if the Obamas had not made it their personal crusade. The president hurt himself on this trip, probably more so than he could possibly have helped himself, had he been successful.

His efforts to make himself look great while condemning slightly over half the American people and trying to force feed them with worthless propositions, has lowered his standing in the public eye, while making him a laughing stock internationally. Some are calling him a lame duck president with over 3 years to serve. I’m beginning to concede that. May God help us through those years.
