In order to fully understand the prophecies of the coming messiah and His kingdom, one must first understand what is being referred to as the kingdom and of His church. Few subjects in the Bible are so clearly taught yet, so horribly misunderstood as this. Many do not recognize that references to “the kingdom” and “the church” are to the same spiritual institution. It is often referred to as “kingdom” in the Old Testament scriptures. Without study, it is easy to wrongfully decide this has reference to a literal kingdom. A physical land with a physical king over it and physical subjects. But in
Daniel, chapter 2, Daniel foretold to King Nebuchadnezzar of the succession of kings and kingdoms that would follow his own (which prophecies came to pass exactly as he predicted) and in verse 44, he told of the kingdom of God which would be established during the last of those kingdoms mentioned, (which was the Roman Empire), that would crumble up and penetrate through the entire world, a kingdom which would never be destroyed. This very obviously has reference to the kingdom spoken of by Jesus, as His kingdom. Read his reference to it in Matthew 16:13-20 where he refers to it as both the kingdom and His church. And also in John 18:36 He speaks to Pilate of His kingdom.Jeremiah 31:31-40. You will also find most of this portion of scripture quoted by the writer in Hebrews 8:8-13. (Joel 2:26-32)
In connection with the coming of Christ and His kingdom, also comes a new covenant...a new testament...which is extended to all people. God spoke through Jeremiah the prophet and explained the coming of this new covenant. Read and meditate thoroughly the scriptures in
The prophet Joel prophesied of the coming of the church (kingdom) and although it contains a considerable amount of symbolism, can readily be seen to refer to that coming kingdom:
And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
Much, indeed , has been said in those verses and perhaps cannot be soon understood by those who have not henceforth studied the explanations by scholars concerning them. But these things become much more vivid when studied with and along side man of the New Testament scriptures.
A later article will be written concerning the New Testament’s predictions of the coming kingdom by the inspired writers as well as by Jesus Himself, along with the actual establishment of that kingdom promised by God and by His son, Jesus.
