Etowah County, Alabama Sheriff’s Department was searching for a man, registered as a sex offender in Cherokee County, as a suspect of sending lewd text messages and pictures to minors in their county. Etowah County is located east of Birmingham.

Clark Wesley Hutchins, Jr., 44, was registered as a resident of a Collinsville, Alabama address but it was learned in their investigation that he was no longer living there. It was discovered that he was staying at the Leesburg Lodge under an assumed name. He was also known to have stayed at a residence on Lay Springs Road, nearby.

Officers from the Etowah and Cherokee Counties Sheriff’s offices as well as the Centre, City police, went to the suspect’s room and knocked on the door but there was no response. They left to get access to the room and when they returned and entered the room, they found a large amount of blood on the floor. Officers believe that the suspect sliced his wrists and then paced the floor when he heard them knock, and then left the premises before they returned.

A massive search was begun in the area with personnel again from the two counties sheriff’s departments, the Leesburg Police Department, the St. Clair County Correctional Facility’s dog tracking team, and helicopters from Alabama State Troopers and the Etowah County Sheriff’s Department. Two days of searching failed produce the suspect.

On Wednesday, the Etowah County Sheriff’s Department received a tip that the suspect was hiding near Pine Cone Marina on Cherokee County Road 106 in Leesburg. After a concerted effort, including the assistance of the deputies from the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the suspect was found hiding in a barn near the Pine Cone Marina. His wrists had been cut and he was sent to the Gadsden Regional Medical Center for treatment and later transferred to the Etowah County Detention Center.

Hutchins was then charged with transmitting obscene material to a child, and confined under a $10,000 bond.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s office also issued an arrest warrant base on the suspect’s failure to notify them when he changed addresses.

Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin said, “I want to thank the deputies of the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force for all of their help during the investigation, Their assistance has proven to be invaluable.”
