France Becomes Second European Country, After Belgium, To Ban Burkas

France has just enacted a new ‘anti burka’ law which will forbid anyone to wear a burka-like clothing which is described by immigration minister Eric Besson as a “walking coffin”. A robe or cloak type garment which has a hood that hides the entire face except for a slit to see out through.

The new ban which takes effect on Monday, April 11, 2011, has already brought on protest marches from some of the nation’s approximately six million Muslim residents. The French authorities have issued warnings to the non-Muslim citizens, not to attempt to apply citizen enforcement of the law. If they see someone breaking the law, the only option they have is to call the police. They have also explained that the Muslim ladies may wear their burka when they are near their mosque, while in their home or riding in an automobile, but not driving.

As might be expected, this new law has aroused protesters. It brings to the forefront some differences in cultures which all nations and all peoples should address. Both Belgium and France sovereign nations with their cultures which have developed over ages of time. Many people have migrated to those countries as they have to the United States and numerous other nations which have welcomed them.

The Muslims are no exception. I don’t know of any country which has not allowed Muslim immigrants into their midst. But it appears that wherever they go and become significant in numbers, they begin to insist upon rights not given to others, refuse to abide by the established laws of their newly chosen land, and give problems in general.

The questions arise...why do they come to any country where it is already established that one cannot cover his face and hide his identity, with the full intent of challenging that law? Anyone, anywhere, who wishes to move to a foreign country should only do so with the full intent of adapting to their established laws and customs...and language.

Last year, a Paris shopper was fined when she ripped off the face covering of a Muslim shopper in a busy department store. She told police she was irritated by the person with her face totally obscured. Officials report that was their first case of “burka rage”.

The French have hung posters in their city government buildings with the wording, “The Republic lives with it‘s face uncovered.”

Although Belgium and France are the only two European countries to have enacted this type of law, it appears that Holland, Spain and Switzerland are likely to follow suit. So far, Britain has made no move in that direction.

Although a number of Muslims have complained that the law is only to embarrass them, officials deny that it has any such motive. It is simply to be able to recognize a person according to their statement. If a woman can wear a burka into a convenience store or bank, why then cannot a man wear a ski-mask or bandana over his face?
