Reasons To Believe the Lord’s Apostles and First Century Christians

The vast majority of what we know concerning Jesus Christ, other than through prophesy, came from the writers of the New Testament books. Not all of it, but most of it. There are writings from secular historians (Flavius Josephus, and others), writings from Christians who were contemporaries with Christ and early Christians who lived shortly after his death. And even though those other writers attest to his existence, there is no need to depend upon them. The strong evidence which can be garnered concerning those inspired writers and first century Christians should convince any non-biased reader without further proofs.

Assuming first of all, that what they wrote was absolute truth, then no one should have room to deny New Testament edicts and doctrines. Follow me with an open mind. First we can name a few things which will convince no one who are striving to disbelieve. These writers claim to be inspired of God, i.e., God literally guided them to write the things which they wrote. Their writings include the words of Jesus himself and his promise to them that he would send the Holy Spirit to them after his ascension.

The inspired writer, Luke, a Greek physician wrote the book of Acts...again, by inspiration, which describes the coming of the Holy Spirit and entering into the twelve apostles, after which they were inspired to preach the first gospel sermons in different languages to “open the doors to Jesus kingdom, his church. (Acts chapter 2).

Now why should people believe what those men, apostles and disciples of Jesus Christ? In order to disbelieve them, one must contend that they lied. What would be the reason for them to lie? How could all of them lie, the same lies without exposing one another? The facts follow.

There was no reason for them to lie. They stood to gain nothing by propagating a new and false religion. If you can think of a sound reason, let’s hear it. I’ll give you sound reasons why they would have profited more (of earthly things and safety) by NOT preaching the gospel which they did so emphatically and without reservation. Jesus warned them of the things they would suffer for his name sake.(Matthew 10:23-25) He warned them in other places that they would be persecuted and that men would kill them...even as they did him. This should cause them to shudder even to preach about Jesus, much less do it knowing it was a lie! They were not liars.

Of the twelve apostles who were with him, thirteen counting the apostle Paul who was appointed later by Jesus, only one died a natural death. John, according to tradition, died naturally. Each of the others were put to death in various ways for their proclamation of Jesus. Either could have lived had they been willing to recant their faith in him. Click Here to read of their deaths.

One could easily discredit these men as witnesses, if they could do any of the following: Show where they had made statements contrary to what they now wrote. Only Paul could be accused of that and it was himself who admitted it. He thought that Jesus was a phony until his encounter with him, and then he became one of the most loyal and eager advocates for him. He was finally sentenced to death for his “heresies” and willingly lay his neck on the block for a Roman soldier to apply the sword to it. Once more, he could have saved himself by denouncing Jesus.

These men were all highly moral and honest men. Dedicated men. Neither stupid or insane. They each believed that Jesus was the Son of God so strongly as to give their life for him.

Their writings differ in some details but they do not, in any circumstance, contradict the other. Different details can be fully expected since each witnessed things at different times and from different views. Each man wrote his own views as guided by the Holy Spirit.
