An Epidemic of Foot-In-Mouth Disease In Politics

Politicians are notorious for several things. Knowingly false promises (lies), risking their reputations and political success for sexual favors, and many other things. But the favorite one at present is putting ones foot in their mouths and then striving to deny it. This mis-step has been around for the life of the nation, but has now grown to major proportions and is strongly enhanced by our "political correctness" phobia.

Back in the days of men, such as Harry Truman, political correctness could be hanged. A critic once made a brief mention in an article that Harry's daughter Margaret's (an aspiring singer) voice was flat. This infuriated the president and he said he would gladly flatten the critic’s nose, if he could see him. It was also told that he was in a meeting with some congressional leaders one time when his proposal was being disagreed with, so he proceeded to walk out. Someone said, "Mr. President, we aren't finished yet." to which Truman replied, "The hell we're not". President Truman couldn't care less what people thought of his rhetoric or his ideas, even if they were politically destructive.

But during this administration, we've had a number of people who spent more time removing a shoe from their mouth than in work. Not only by slip of the lips but other skeletons discovered in their closets or elsewhere. During the campaign in 2008, Obama's series of elegant speeches were addressed primarily to how he only knew certain people as a "man in the neighborhood", or how he listened to an anti-American, Hell fire and Brimstone preacher for twenty years and never heard any "anti-American remarks. His choice of a clueless Vice President spent the first six months removing shoes from his mouth, until they remove him from the microphones as much as possible. Several of the Obama appointees spent weeks explaining how their taxes had evaded them rather than them evading their taxes.

Now that the new presidential campaign is beginning to brew, we are again beset with some critical things happening. Recently, Newt Gingrich, one of the leading contenders for the GOP presidential nominee, announced his plans to run and then, almost immediately, while submitting to an interview on Meet the Press, was asked for his opinion on the budget proposal put forward by GOP congressman Paul Ryan, Gingrich said that it was “too big a jump” and then, “I don’t think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering.”

Ryan’s proposal had been lauded by many Tea Party members and GOP leaders as well as many conservative voters. Gingrich has spent hours trying to explain away what he said, even calling it a mistake, but it has not been universally forgiven. He may have destroyed his already questionable opportunity to win the nomination.

The latest of the real “stinkers” has been by President Obama that his position is that a Palestinian state must be based on Israel’s pre-1967 boundaries.  This so flabbergasted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that he asked for a meeting with the president. In the meeting with reporters present, some report that the prime minister rebuffed the president soundly. Also the yells and cries from other sources sent Obama scurrying to “explain” the real meaning of his statement. Unfortunately, most people express their true thoughts on the spur of the moment, not after having time to reword them and muddy the water.

The president also added, ““As Americans have been seared by hostage taking, violent rhetoric, and terrorist attacks that have killed thousands of our citizens, a failure to change our approach [in the Middle East] threatens a deepening spiral of division between the United States and Muslim communities,” And he has made similar suggestions since his election. In fact, if one puts these words in a Google search window “Obama throws Israel under the bus”, you will see numerous entries, dating back at least to May 2009. He has consistently tried to appease the Palestinians at the expense of Israel who has proven to be a loyal ally among numerous enemies. There is a good possibility that the president will have lost many of his Jewish backers, come 2012.

And back to Newt Gingrich’s blunder, even though he has made a strong effort to defend his words, there seems to be little that can be said which will satisfy the strict conservatives. This writer fears that he will achieve the very same backing as did John McCain in 2008. The mood of the majority of voters at this time is that something drastic must be done to slow our deficit spending.

One thing the liberals are attacking with their lies is the destruction of Medicare and Medicaid. This only shows stupidity when it has a plan that will improve the ability to secure proper care for seniors. The difference in this plan and Obamacare is that this plan is short and sweet leaving no one in the dark. There is the proposal that $15,000 per person be allowed for the purchase of one’s own private insurance. This is much better than to pay $3,000 to $5,000 for a supplement to Medicare without cash assistance, only to be rejected by many physicians and when you do secure one, have to pay much of the charges

Thanks for your clarification about Medicare. I am basically confused there. And Harry Truman? There will never be another Harry Truman. He was once in a historical moment. A Treasure.
